Hong Kong Approves Air Pollution Control Regulation

Steamship Mutual has recently published a Risk Alert notifying its Members that the Hong Kong Legislative Council has approved the Air Pollution Control Regulation which will apply to vessels greater than 500GT that are certificated under the SOLAS Convention and while at berth in Hong Kong.

The Regulation will come into force on 1st July 2015.

While there are certain exemptions that apply, generally speaking vessels must switch to an approved fuel after the first hour of arrival and up to the last hour before departure from Hong Kong waters.

The full article can be found here and goes into further details on crucial aspects of the Regulation such as the definition of “at berth”, exemptions to the Regulation, alternatives to low sulphur fuels and exemption applications, and the importance of record keeping.
